Structure

The structure of the AETC is principally to provide independent “grassroots” policy advice on education and training to the respective Ministers for education and training at the state and national levels. This structure is in keeping with recommendation one in the Review of the Western Australian Aboriginal Education and Training Council 2005:

‘The AETC or a similar Aboriginal advisory forum continue to ensure that Aboriginal people are able to have an effective independent voice in their education and training, not influenced, dominated or diluted by the non-Aboriginal community.’

Since 2006, there has been a steady increase in the number of community members from 6 to 10 to encompass the geographic regions of WA and to fully represent each area. Ex-officio members will increase with the addition of industry and employment partners and Aboriginal educators. The current Chief Executive Officers from education and training cross-sectoral areas and Higher Education representatives will not change but the requirement to attend will be determined by agenda items and the relevant expertise that Council requires to assist in its deliberations.

Each meeting with the ex-officio members will have time dedicated to its specific core business, sphere of influence and area of expertise thus enabling strategic efficient advice at all levels across all sectors and ensuring there is real flow through of “grassroots” advice and information. It is imperative for ex-officio members of the Council to give full support to the Aboriginal Education and Training Council and attend in person wherever possible. Details of the first meeting will be forwarded before each meeting.

Ex-officio members will be expected to provide a brief report to Council on their implementation progress to meet the specific education and training needs of Aboriginal students as delineated by the Western Australian Strategic Plan for Aboriginal Education and Training 2005-2008.
