Carol Garlett - Chair

Hello everyone, I welcome this opportunity to introduce myself as the new Chairperson of the Aboriginal Education and Training Council (AETC). I come from Brookton in Western Australia and I am the eldest daughter of Dick and Milly Reidy. My large extended family network includes the McGuire families, the Bennell families, the Collard families and the Reidy and Garlett families. I was married to the late Rex Garlett and we have two sons Julian and Andrew.

I have been involved in education since commencing my employment with the Department of Education and Training in 1973 as a primary teacher at Williams District High School. Since then I have taught in various locations across the state including schools in the metropolitan, country and remote areas. I was a classroom teacher for nineteen years before working in various administrative roles in central office of the Department of Education and Training, including appointment to the Kimberley District as the District Director in 2003.

Karla Tucker - Executive Officer

My name is Karla Tucker and I am the new Executive Officer of the AETC. I come from an education background where my passion has been invested in working with Aboriginal students and students at risk, both as a teacher, coordinator and mentor/advocate. During the last 15yrs I left education to work as an advocate and union representative in education and construction industries and have now returned to education – my true passion. All my life I have only worked where I believe that my participation means something more important than my CV and my pay packet.

In the short time I have been in the role of Executive Officer, I love my work; I love the people I meet with, their rich diversity of life experience, perspectives and knowledge. I am 100% committed to supporting the new full time Chair, who is an inspiring woman and really enjoyable to work with, in her role to facilitate accelerated improvements in all areas of Aboriginal education and training through action and a forward thinking Aboriginal Education and Training Council.
