Carol Garlett Carol Garlett - Chair

Hello everyone,
I am a Whadjuk-Balardong woman from the Nyoongar nation.  I was born in Beverley but my home town is Brookton in Western Australia.  My parents are Dick and Milly Reidy.  I belong to the Reidy-Collard, McGuire-Bennell families.  I have three sisters (Dorothy, Rose and Judy) and three brothers (Trevor, Richard and Thomas).  My late husband Rex Garlett and I have two sons, Julian and Andrew and one grandchild, Zac.

I have been working with the Department of Education and Training since 1973 when I was a graduate teacher.  My first appointment was to Williams District High School.  Since then I have taught at various places across the state of Western Australia including schools in metropolitan, rural and remote areas.  I was a classroom teacher for nineteen years.  In 1993 I commenced work in Central Office of the Department of Education and Training as a Staffing Officer within the Human Resources Directorate and held that position for two and a half years.  My promotion to Senior Education Officer mid - way through 1995 saw me in a role that required me to develop strong links with Aboriginal communities across the state and promote the public school system.  Since 1998 I have held various positions in the Department including Manager, Assistant Director and Director in Aboriginal Education.  I was the District Director in the Kimberley for three years and had responsibility for 22 government schools across that region.  I have a wealth of experience in education as an educator, parent and community member.

As Chairperson of the Aboriginal Education and Training Council of Western Australia, a Ministerial advisory council on Aboriginal Education and Training in Western Australia I am committed to improving education and training for Aboriginal people.  I will work hard to make education and training more inclusive of Aboriginal students by working to achieve the 5 priorities of the WAAETC Strategic Plan which are Aboriginal cultural identity, maintenance and security, capacity building of Aboriginal communities, community engagement, recognition, promotion and celebration of excellence and advocacy in Aboriginal education, training and employment.  To progress these priorities, a major focus of the WAAETC this year will be the facilitation and development of school and community educational partnerships.
